How Far Can You Go? A Look at the Longest-Range Private Jets

Data from OAG Aviation shows that as of November 10th, 2024, the average number of flights per day was over 100,000.

Air travel has skyrocketed in recent decades, and with that, people are traveling much further. Modern technology has improved the range of aircraft, but there are still limitations.

People often assume that large commercial airliners are the only option for long-distance flights, but this isn't necessarily the case. While many private jets have a fairly short range, the longest-range private jet (and several others) are capable of some very long flights.

In this guide, we'll take a look at which private jets have the longest-range so that you can plan for your next long trip. Keep reading for more.

Typical Range of a Private Jet

The range of private jets can vary greatly depending on various factors. The first thing to consider is the type of private jet, as this can have a huge impact on the range.

Turboprop

Turboprop planes are technically not private jets, but they're often used as such. Plenty of people use them for private air travel, so they can be considered in the same category.

They have a shorter range than other types, typically only being capable of about 1,000-1,300 miles, spending about 3-4 hours in the air. They're only suitable for shorter journeys and are best for those trying to keep the costs down.

Light Jets

As the name suggests, light jets are the smallest type available. These jets usually have a takeoff weight of between 10,000 and 20,000 pounds.

Light jets generally have a range similar to turboprops, or sometimes a bit more. They can fly around 1,000-1,800 miles on a single trip in about 3-4 hours.

Like turboprops, they're best for short journeys. However, they're often faster and more luxurious.

Midsize Jets

If you want to travel a bit further, you could consider a midsize jet. These offer a good balance as they can travel further than a light jet but are still not overly expensive.

The range is usually about 2,000-3,000 miles with a fight time of 4-6 hours. They're larger than light jets, too, often accommodating up to 12 passengers.

Super-Midsize Jets

Super-midsize jets are usually a similar size to midsize jets but offer improvements in certain areas, such as:

  • Range
  • Speed
  • Comfort

Midsize jets typically have a range of 3,000-4,000 miles and a flight time of 5-7 hours. In many cases, they're also more luxurious than midsize jets.

Heavy Jets

Heavy jets are at the larger end and have room for up to 16 passengers. They usually have ranges of 4,000+ miles, making them ideal for larger groups and longer trips. The max takeoff weight of a heavy jet is about 50,000 pounds or more, and they can stay in the air for around 6-10+ hours.

People often opt for heavy jets when making transatlantic or transpacific trips. They provide an impressive level of comfort and have various amenities, such as:

  • Comfortable seating
  • Fully-equipped alleys
  • Entertainment systems

Ultra Long-Range Jets

Ultra long-range jets are often considered the best private jets for long flights. They often have ranges of 6,500+ miles, making them ideal for intercontinental flights.

In terms of long-distance private jets, these are the most luxurious and can travel the furthest. If you want to make a long trip, this is the category you should be looking at.

Longest Range Private Jet Options

In general, larger jets can travel further, but they also burn more fuel and cost more overall. With that said, you should always look at the specifics of a jet before committing to it.

The top-range business jets may not always be the best choice to go with depending on various factors, such as:

  • Where you're flying
  • How far it is
  • How many passengers will be on board
  • How luxurious you want it to be
  • Your budget

It's worth making a private jet range comparison so you can find the best option for any specific trip. If range is the most important factor, then the following private jets can all be great options.

Bombardier Global 8000: 8,000 NM

Bombardier has established itself in the aviation industry as one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in the world. They produce various types of planes and have several private jets available. Among those, the Global 8000 is one of the most impressive.

It has a range of roughly 8,000 nautical miles, which is very impressive even for a larger private jet. On top of this, it can reach a transcontinental cruise speed of Mach 0.92, making it one of the fastest private jets in the world.

The performance isn't the only thing that makes it stand out. Bombardier is known for implementing the latest technology in their aircraft, and it has all of the amenities you would expect from a high-end private jet. When it comes to luxury private jet travel, the Bombardier Global 8000 really is the cream of the crop.

Gulfstream G700: 7,750 NM

Another very well-known brand in aviation is Gulfstream, and like Bombardier, they're no strangers to private jets. They've released various models over the years, with the G700 being one of the most impressive.

It has a range of 7,750 nautical miles, so it falls short of the Bombardier Global 8000, though not by much. Something that stands out with this jet is the large cabin, which has a size of 2,603 cubic feet. It can comfortably fit 19 passengers and up to 25 people in total, making it one of the best options for a larger group.

Something else to note about the G700 is that it can reach a maximum speed of 0.935, so it's slightly faster than the Global 8000. The interior also has up to five living areas, so if you want to ensure you're comfortable on your long-distance flight, the G700 is a great choice.

Bombardier Global 7500: 7,700 NM

Another entry by Bombardier is the Global 7500. Being from the same line, this private jet offers a somewhat similar experience to the Global 8000. While it can't fly quite as far, it has a range of 7,700 nautical miles, which is still very impressive.

It has a customizable four-zone cabin, which you will also find in the Global 8000. You'll also find a crew suite and a full-size kitchen on board. The cabin is relatively large with room for up to 19 passengers.

As with several other Bombardier aircraft, the Global 7500 features Soleil lighting, which is designed to help combat jet lag. As this jet has a flight time of up to 17 hours, a feature like this can be incredibly helpful.

Gulfstream G650ER: 7,000 NM

It's no surprise that Gulfstream would have one more entry on this list, and while it may not be as impressive as the G700, the G650ER can still provide an exceptional experience. It's a bit smaller with just three living areas, though this is more than enough for most people.

It's capable of reaching speeds of Mach 0.925, so you can expect quick journeys. Even with the slightly smaller cabin, it can still comfortably fit up to 19 passengers.

The G650ER is one of the most popular private jets in the world, due to offering benefits such as:

  • Speed
  • Reliability
  • Versatility

This model has a range of 7,500 nautical miles and an average flight time of 12 to 16 hours, so it can make most trips without the need to refuel.

Gulfstream G650: 7,000 NM

The Gulfstream G650 is very similar to the G650ER, though it has a shorter range. It can achieve a distance of about 7,000 nautical miles in a single flight. It's worth noting that it's also slightly smaller with a capacity of 18 passengers.

Aside from that, it comes with all the latest amenities and features, such as:

  • Ka-band high-speed Wi-Fi
  • In-flight luggage access
  • A fully enclosed aft lavatory

Naturally, flying in a G650 is typically more cost-effective than a G650ER. If you don't need the additional range and want to keep costs down, this is a great alternative.

Gulfstream G550: 6,750 NM

Another very popular model by Gulfstream is the G550. Again, it's known for being highly versatile while providing exceptional performance.

This is an older model, so it can't quite keep up with the G650. The range of this jet is a bit lower at 6,750 and it has a cruising speed of Mach 0.8. This might seem unimpressive when looking at the above models, but it's still at the higher end for private jets on the whole.

It offers a similarly customizable interior with enough space for 19 passengers. There are also suitable storage facilities and safety features, ensuring it's suitable for just about any trip.

Dassault Aviation Falcon 8X: 6,450 NM

Dassault Aviation is a big player in the aviation industry. Since being founded in 1929, this company has produced a wide range of military and civil aircraft, including their Falcon family of business jets.

The Falcon 8X is the most recent model in this line, and as such, is the most advanced. It has a range of about 6,450 nautical miles and an average flight time of roughly 14 hours.

This is an upgrade from the previous model (Falcon 7X) which was slower and had a shorter range. The newer model also has a larger cabin, allowing for up to 16 passengers (though it's more comfortable with about 12).

One of the standout benefits of the Falcon 8X is that it offers more customizability than many other jets. As such, owners can create an interior that's perfect for them. Another noteworthy feature is the sound reduction technology used in the design, helping to provide a more peaceful experience.

The newer model (the Falcon 10X) is currently in development and is scheduled for a 2025 release. It's being launched as a competitor to the Bombardier Global 7500 and the Gulfstream G700, so it is likely to be quite an upgrade from this version.

Boeing Business Jet 2: 5,500 NM

While Boeing is best known for its commercial airliners, they also offer private jets. With that said, that doesn't mean they have made things any smaller.

The Boeing Business Jet 2 is a customized version of their 737-800 airliner. As such, it's one of the largest private jets available with enough room to accommodate up to 50 passengers.

The range doesn't quite match some of the other entries on this list, but it's still capable of an impressive 5,500 nautical miles. With a cruising speed of Mach 0.82, it matched the standard 737-800.

The spacious interior makes this a great option for large groups. It has a luxurious interior and implements cutting-edge technology to ensure comfort for all passengers.

Embraer Praetor 600: 4,018 NM

The range on the Embraer Praetor is a bit less than those listed above, but it still has plenty to offer. With a range of 4,018 nautical miles and a cruising speed of Mach 0.8, it can still make pretty lengthy trips.

The cabin is large enough to fit 12 passengers, and it can even accommodate lie-flat seats for some of the most comfortable flying around. A standout feature is the large windows, which are uncommon on most planes. These let in plenty of natural light, resulting in a more pleasant experience during daytime flights.

It was launched in 2018 and boasts plenty of modern technology. For example, advanced connectivity means that passengers can enjoy a high-speed internet connection at all times.

Cessna Citation Longitude: 3,500 NM

Many people know Cessna as a manufacturer of light aircraft, but that's not the extent of their capabilities. The Cessna Citation Longitude is a private jet that can carry up to 12 passengers.

It's a super-midsize jet with a range of 3,500 nautical miles, so it's capable of some reasonably long trips. One of the key benefits of this model when compared to the others on this list is the operating costs. If you want to make a long journey in comfort while sticking to a budget, this is one of the best options available.

Finding the Right Private Jet for You

If you want to take a long flight, you might be looking for the longest-range private jet, but it's important to consider all options. All of the options on this list can provide a great experience, so it's important to think about your specific needs.
